A stack of interlocked biting kooikerhondjes -a typical Dutch dog bred for duck hunting and featured in many 17th-century oil paintings- forms a gate design.
This work is part of an ongoing series of etchings and watercolors in which Enthoven uses companion animals as building blocks for objects that cannot be executed.
The work is an etching printed by Eric Levert in black ink on paper, with whom Enthoven has collaborated for a number of years. Each print is hand-colored by Enthoven using yellow iron oxide and cadmium red watercolor.
About Tim Enthoven
Central to Tim Enthoven's drawings, books and installations are psychological tests, dog-breed charts and architectural diagrams that he appropriates to construct narratives drawn from his own life. His work depicts individuals contorted by the systems they inhabit and addresses how ideology manifests in our everyday lives. Enthoven creates meticulously hand-rendered drawings and watercolors, combining them with etching, digital collage and sculpture. Recently, he has focused on an autobiographical project based on his experiences in a group home, developing a series of watercolors into installations and books.
Tim Enthoven is a Dutch visual artist who holds an MFA from the Yale School of Art. He has had solo exhibitions at the By Art Matters Museum in Hangzhou, Espacio Odeon in Bogotá and galleries including YveYANG Gallery in New York and Fons Welters Gallery in Amsterdam. His work has been featured in numerous group exhibitions including in The Lisbon Architecture Triennale, The Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Antenna Space in Shanghai, and TEFAF New York. Enthoven is the recipient of the Rene Smeets Award and Plantin Moretus Award, and grants from the Mondriaan Fund and The Prins Bernhard Foundation. As an illustrator, he is a longtime contributor to The New York Times and The New Yorker. Enthoven lives and works in Amsterdam.
