Neo-o-old at Milan Design Week 2026
What is in the name is essential, both are interdependent and speaks of time as a necessity.
Neo-o-old is an initiative by Min Chen; Min then asked me to take on the art direction.
At its core, Neo-o-old is about cultural exchange: various artists from all over the world are invited to take part in a residency in China to learn about the local crafts and culture, and then to respond with a design.
The first results, which can be viewed in Milan this year, are by: Francesca Torzo, Tim Enthoven, Masataka Hosoo, Raw Color, Min Chen and myself.
One cannot exist without the other; who made it, where it was made and what it is made of are essential to our relationship with the object, yet nowadays we are often unaware of the effort that went into creating it. Neo-o-old is not a onetime statement but a progression, the works that follow will be complementary to the previous ones, constantly questioning their positioning and technically challenging. It resists shortcuts and premature results. It is about process and presence, not pressure.
